Hazel Bean visited Dr Jenni because Mum had noticed a soft mobile mass on the base of her tail. We took a sample of cells from the mass and sent them to the laboratory for testing and found that mass was a soft tissue sarcoma, which is a common tumor in dogs.
We took Hazel Bean to sur-gery and were faced with a dilemma - to have the best chance of curing her cancer and preventing it from re-growing; we needed to re-move the mass with large margins of normal tissue around it. This is a real chal-lenge on the tail where there is very little spare skin.
It is really important that we check all lumps and bumps as soon as you notice them - it is much easier to remove tumors when they are small and we then have the best chance of a good outcome for our patients.
