Australian Canine Eye Scheme
The AVA-ANKC Australian Canine Eye Scheme is a new surveillance system that will run alongside the Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Scheme and other AVA-sponsored national accreditation programs.
The aim has been to emulate the standards of established eye certiification schemes in the United Kingdom, Europe, USA and Canada, and their respective national Kennel Clubs, but the biggest limitation until recently has been the lack of qualified veterinary opthalmologists.
Now, all mainland states support at least one fully qualifies eye specialist, and the other states and territories are covered by visiting specialists. Features of the northern hemisphere eye schemes have been combined into a new framework that provides conscientious breeders and caring owners with the essential mechanisms needed to monitor inherited eye disease in dogs.
